Author Spotlight: Interview with Author Kate Moseman

TJ: Hello! Welcome to Author Spotlight where both new and veteran authors share a little about themselves and their work. Today we have Paranormal Women’s Fiction author, Kate Moseman. Let’s get into it, Kate. Care to tell readers us about yourself?

Kate Moseman: I’m a former teacher and librarian who became a stay-at-home-mom-turned -entrepreneur.  My “day job” is blogging; I also write cookbooks.  But my passion is writing fiction!  Somehow, I manage to spin all these plates while also homeschooling.  It’s a little crazy.

TJ:  What inspired you to become a writer?

Kate Moseman: I always wanted to be a writer, but the path to get here was long and winding.  I worked as a public school teacher, and later a school librarian, for most of a decade before I became a stay-at-home mom.  A need to earn some extra money propelled me into blogging, and I became a relatively successful food blogger, and later a travel and lifestyle blogger.  After publishing a few cookbooks, I decided I wanted to try writing fiction.  It was, frankly, terrifying – but I did it!  I wrote my first novel, a sweet romance / chick lit called Roller Coaster Romance, in 2019.  Then I switched to writing light paranormal romance.  My light paranormal romances, A Good Demon Is Hard to Find and A Witch’s Work Is Never Done, comprise the Supernatural Sweethearts series.  When paranormal women’s fiction became popular in 2020, I decided to give it a try.  I wrote Silver Spells, my first paranormal women’s fiction book, in just four months – which, for me, is quite fast!

T.J.:  If you could meet any person dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Kate Moseman:
I wish I could have met Don Callandar, the author of the ‘Mancer series, before he passed away in 2008.  I didn’t know it until later, but he lived in the same county as me!  His fantasy books have a gentleness and an optimism I haven’t seen the like of in any other fantasy novels.  The ‘Mancer series probably had more influence on my writing than anything else.

T.J: Now, is my favorite part of the interview, hearing all about your work. Can you tell readers about Silver Spells, and the Midlife Elementals series?

Kate Moseman: Silver Spells is a paranormal women’s fiction story.  If you haven’t heard of Paranormal Women’s Fiction, it’s a newly reinvigorated genre with middle-aged female protagonists who find their powers – whatever they may be – at midlife.  In Silver Spells, our protagonist loses her job under mysterious circumstances, and suddenly gains the gift of elemental air magic.  On top of that, a beautiful, magical dog becomes her companion.  It’s a really lovely story, filled with magic and friendship and family, and there’s quite a few mysteries to be unraveled in the process.  The sequel, Silver Charms, features Luella’s friend, Rose, and her fire magic; and the third book in the series, Silver Dreams, will feature the Pepper, the third friend in their trio, and her water magic.  I’m also working on a side story featuring the antagonist from Silver Charms!  That particular story will appear in the upcoming anthology Girdles and Ghouls.

TJ: I have my own Paranormal Women’s Fiction novel, Eastside Hedge Witch, with a publisher, Mad Raptor Productions. This genre is taking off, and I’m here for it. It’s been a pleasure interviewing another PWF author. I look forward to reading Silver Spells. Well, that wraps things up. Thank you for visiting my blog. I wish you the best of luck with your series. Hope to have you back again!

Kate Moseman:
Thank you!  It’s been a pleasure.
